Study on the Environmental Sanitation and Health Status in an Island of Kyung Nam Province


Abstract
A survey was conducted by the author and 30 students of Jin Joo Junior Nursing College, Nam Hea Islands of Chang Sun-myun, Nam Hea Gun, Kyung Nam Province from 26 July 1977 through 20 August 1977, on the environmental sanitation and the status of health. The survey directed to a total population of residing in 490 households of the island of Nam Hea led us to the follow¡©ing findings: 1) Basic characteristics of respondents. Average number of family per household was 6.1 persons and average number of room per household was 3.3. Financial or living standard was "ordinary" or better than ordinary with 87.2 percent and these who were from "poor" families rated 12.8 percent. 2) Housing. Out of total 85.3 percent was slat house. The rate of propiator is 97.3 percent while that of rentors, 2.7 percent. 3) Environmental sanitation. As to the source of potable water, 57.6% relied en the simplified water work; 40.4% on the well and 2.0%, on the pump water. Astonishingly, many of the households (36.7%) did not have a place to keep their food and this implies that in most cases foods are exposed to an easy access of the rodents and insects. Sideboards constituted 39. 2% of the major methods of storage. The distance from the latrines and located the wells was 68.7% and 74.2% of the below 10 m. 4) Health condition. The rate of prevalence was 12.8 percent and 40.9% of patients was being taken care of while 59.1% being ignored due mainly to the financial inability. Out of total 3.72% was treated hos¡©pital or clinic, health center 7.1%, home treatment; 55.7%, respectively.
